Swine Influenza Virus (SIV)
Swine Influenza Virus (SIV) is a type A Orthomyxovirus that causes acute, highly contagious respiratory disease in pigs. Multiple subtypes circulate globally, including H1N1, H3N2, and H1N2, with some strains capable of zoonotic transmission.
Outbreaks are often explosive, with rapid onset and high morbidity across all age groups.
Clinical signs include:
- Sudden fever, dry cough, tachypnea
- Nasal discharge, lethargy, reduced appetite
- Reproductive disturbances (e.g., return to oestrus, abortions) in breeding sows
- Secondary bacterial infections and poor growth in growers
Transmission:
- Aerosolized droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces
- High-risk in intensive housing and cold seasons
qPCR testing offers:
- Rapid and highly specific detection of SIV RNA from nasal swabs, oral fluids, or lung tissue
- Identification of circulating subtypes(in extended assays)
- Early detection in both clinical outbreaks and routine surveillance
Applications:
- Confirmation of respiratory outbreaks
- Pre-entry or pre-shipment testing
- Monitoring the impact of vaccination programs
Swine Influenza qPCR is a critical tool for controlling respiratory disease, managing zoonotic risk, and preventing disruption to pig production and herd performance.
