PRRSV-1 (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus – European Strain)
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV-1) is a highly contagious arterivirus responsible for one of the most economically significant diseases in pig production. PRRSV-1 refers to the European genotype(Type 1), which is genetically and antigenically distinct from the North American Type 2 strain (PRRSV-2).
PRRSV-1 affects pigs of all ages, causing:
- Reproductive losses – abortions, stillbirths, mummified fetuses, and weak-born piglets in sows
- Respiratory disease – interstitial pneumonia, coughing, fever, and increased mortality in weaners and growers
Transmission occurs via:
- Direct contact, aerosol, semen, or contaminated equipment
- Vertical transmission from sow to fetus
qPCR testing enables:
- Highly sensitive and specific detection of PRRSV-1 RNA from serum, oral fluids, tissue samples (lung, lymph nodes), or semen
- Detection during both acute outbreaks and subclinical circulation
- Monitoring of herd status, vaccine virus differentiation, and eradication efforts
This test is essential for:
- Outbreak investigation and control planning
- Routine surveillance, especially in breeding herds
- Monitoring incoming gilts and boars for disease freedom
qPCR is the gold standard for PRRSV detection, offering rapid, actionable results for effective biosecurity and disease management in modern pig production systems.
