Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV)
Classical Swine Fever (CSF), or Hog Cholera, is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease of pigs caused by a Pestivirus in the Flaviviridae family. It affects domestic and wild pigs, with severe economic implications due to trade restrictions and control measures. CSF is a notifiable disease and must be reported immediately.
Transmission occurs through:
- Direct contact with infected animals
- Contaminated feed, fomites, and transport vehicles
- Feeding of uncooked swill or pork products
Clinical signs vary with virulence and may include:
- High fever, weakness, conjunctivitis
- Petechiae and cyanosis(ears, abdomen)
- Neurological signs, diarrhea, abortion, or stillbirths
- Sudden death in peracute forms
qPCR testing offers:
- Rapid, sensitive detection of CSFV RNA from blood, tonsils, spleen, lymph nodes, or oral fluids
- Early confirmation of infection, even before clinical signs are apparent
- Crucial support for disease surveillance, eradication programs, and movement control
qPCR is the gold standard diagnostic tool used by reference labs for:
- Outbreak investigation and control
- Pre-movement testing and certification
- Differentiation from African Swine Fever and other vesicular diseases
Early and accurate diagnosis helps prevent the spread of infection and limit economic losses through swift containment and regulatory action.
