Brucella abortus

Brucella abortus is a highly infectious, zoonotic bacterium that causes bovine brucellosis, a notifiable disease in many countries. It primarily affects the reproductive system, leading to:

  • Late-term abortions
  • Retained placenta and metritis
  • Infertility and reduced milk yield

Transmission occurs via ingestion, inhalation, or contact with contaminated reproductive tissues or fluids. The organism can also infect humans, causing undulant fever.

qPCR testing offers:

  • Rapid, sensitive detection of B. abortus DNA in aborted fetal tissues, vaginal swabs, milk, or lymph nodes
  • A faster alternative to bacterial culture or serology, especially useful in acute abortion events
  • Specific confirmation in suspect cases or where vaccination may confound serology results

Early identification of infected animals enables prompt containment, culling, and notification to authorities, helping to prevent further spread within and between herds.
