Avian Mycoplasma

Mycoplasma infections are among the most economically important chronic respiratory diseases in poultry, especially in breeding and commercial flocks. The two main species tested by qPCR are:

  • Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) – causes chronic respiratory disease in chickens and infectious sinusitis in turkeys.
  • Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) – associated with subclinical upper respiratory infections and synovitis, particularly in layers and breeders.

Clinical signs include:

  • Nasal discharge, coughing, conjunctivitis
  • Drop in egg production and hatchability
  • Swollen joints or lameness in MS infections

qPCR testing provides:

  • Highly sensitive detection from tracheal or choanal swabs, air sac tissue, or environmental samples
  • Useful for monitoring breeder flocks, confirming outbreaks, or certifying Mycoplasma-free status
  • Faster and more reliable than culture, especially in vaccinated or subclinical birds

Regular surveillance using qPCR supports early detection, eradication efforts, and trade compliance, especially in breeding programs and international export settings.
