Chlamydia psittaci , the cause of psittacosis in humans and one of the most important avian chlamydial pathogens, is commonly identified in parrots, pigeons, poultry, doves, and many other bird species. This test detects Chlamydia spp. antigen, including Chlamydia psittaci , using a highly sensitive and specific immunoassay. As the assay detects antigen from the Chlamydia genus, it does not differentiate between individual species. In avian species, however, Chlamydia psittaci is by far the most commonly identified pathogen and is therefore considered the most likely cause of a positive result. This test is particularly recommended for birds showing respiratory signs, chronic illness, poor performance, or before introducing new birds into a collection.
