Porcine Enteric Coronavirus & Rotavirus Panel (qPCR)

This multiplex qPCR panel detects the major viral pathogens causing diarrhea in neonatal and weaned piglets, helping to distinguish between clinically similar but epidemiologically distinct agents.

Included viruses:

1. Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV)

A highly contagious Alphacoronavirus causing severe enteritis and high mortality in piglets under 2 weeks of age. Clinical signs include vomiting, profuse watery diarrhea, dehydration, and rapid death. Often indistinguishable from PEDV without laboratory testing.

2. Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV)

Another Alphacoronavirus, PEDV causes similar signs to TGEV, particularly in young piglets. Morbidity is nearly 100%, with high mortality in suckling pigs. Older pigs may develop transient diarrhea and anorexia. PEDV outbreaks can cause massive economic losses.

3. Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV)

An emerging enteric virus with clinical signs overlapping TGEV and PEDV. PDCoV generally causes less severe disease but is still significant in co-infections and naive herds. It has zoonotic potential and is part of ongoing global surveillance efforts.

4. Group A Porcine Rotavirus (RVA)

A leading cause of viral diarrhea in piglets, especially after the first week of life. Rotavirus group A affects enterocytes in the small intestine, leading to malabsorption, diarrhea, dehydration, and poor weight gain.

Sample types:

  • Fresh feces or rectal swabs from affected piglets
  • Intestinal content or tissue(e.g., jejunum) from deceased animals

qPCR benefits:

  • Highly sensitive and specific detection of each virus
  • Enables early differentiation for outbreak response and control
  • Supports vaccination and biosecurity strategies

This panel is ideal for rapid investigation of scouring outbreaks, helping guide targeted management decisions, prevent unnecessary antimicrobial use, and reduce losses in farrowing and nursery units.
